Although social media has done a great job in connecting us through different time zones, climates and global regions it has also created a new problem. The new issue that now you have to try to curate your social media presence although you may not be at the forefront of the one posting or uploading information, images and tracking about your presence.
Monitor Your Newsfeed
One of the most dreaded nuisances that can occur as someone who is trying to manage their social media presence is when friends or family tag you in photos or statuses that don’t necessary reflect the image you are trying to create of yourself. When you log into Facebook and see something that catches you off-guard such as an unflattering picture, you may want to immediately take it down before anyone sees it. There are a few ways in which you can approach this. You can first untag yourself from the photo which you will find in your settings option. Once you have done this the image will be removed from your newsfeed limiting the amount of people that see it, but remember the image is still there. If you really do not like the photo and are comfortable doing it you can always send the person who posted it a private message asking them to remove it. If that fails, or if you are uncomfortable requesting the person to take the photo down you can always as a last resort flag the image as inappropriate which will have Facebook take the image down.
Change Your Account Settings
To help prevent yourself from feeling anxious if what you did on Friday is going to show up in your Facebook newsfeed to your colleagues and family on Monday, take a look at your account settings. There is often a place where you can edit what parts of your profile is visible to others. You can choose to make some things visible to only a select group of people, or you can select to have to actively accept or reject when new images of you or tagged by others to appear on your newsfeed. Keep in mind that Facebook is constantly changing its settings so you should actively look up what is available to maintain your online privacy and overall image.
Staying aware of how you are presenting yourself on the internet is a good way to manage your overall look, perception and image online.
